Waipuna Trust Young Parents Musical Play course

Julie was approached by the St John Of God Waipuna Trust to facilitate musical parenting classes for teenage and young parents.  As Julie was busy she asked me to help run these sessions. The original plan was 5 weeks but this extended into a full term.

The basic weekly format was a 45 minute Music and Movement session following the musical parenting philosophy of following the child in musical play. After a break for a drink and something for the children to eat we would spend a further 45 minutes together. Each week we would do something different.  We shared ideas on using music in our homes, made instruments from re-cycling, let the children draw to music (the Carnival of the Animals), play-dough, and generally gave the mums and children time to play and talk together.

Mums shared that the most helpful part of the course was “Getting out of the house, having a chat with the other mums”, “I noticed a big change in Layla”, “Learning new songs to use at home”, “It was good for all the kids and they had fun”.   Since coming to the course Mums commented that they were singing and dancing more with their children and they are following instructions better.

For me, I enjoyed seeing the power of music to help regulate children and grow their confidence.  It was an incredible journey!
