A workshop for teachers, parents, grandparents and anyone interested in sharing music with small children

In this workshop we will sing, dance and play, as well as analyse the elements of activities which help children to learn and grow. We will explore how to get closer to young ones, through music and play, and how to claim our own creativity and playfulness.

Soili Perkiö is recognised world wide for her inspirational music workshops, theatre productions and publications. She chairs the Department of Music Education at the Sibelius-Akademy, Helsinki and is also a guest lecturer at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. She studied music education, piano and voice at the Sibelius-Akademy, and is an expert in music and movement, folk music and early childhood music education. Soili has written a number of music books for primary and early childhood classroom with such titles as Time to sing with your baby, Singing with children and Music and movement for children. She has worked with the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation making radio programmes for children since 1984, and is an inveterate tourer, giving concerts in schools and kindergartens as a way of awakening an interest in Finnish folk instruments.

“Soili’s workshops are based on sound music and dance pedagogy. I have been totally inspired and enchanted with her musicality, warmth and depth of knowledge.” Julie Wylie

This will be a fantastic one-off opportunity to learn from a wonderful Finnish presenter. If you are a teacher working in early childhood or junior school, a parent or a grandparent then you mustn’t miss this. We anticipate if filling quickly so please register early.

Julie Wylie’s Corner

Firstly a very big thank you to Jody Keehan, Julie Gaudin, Louise Shand and Sarah Cannon for doing such amazing music presentations for Children’s Day Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Feedback was very positive and I was grateful to know that the music was being conducted by such enthusiastic presenters. I heard that the children were drawn into the music and were captivated by the many music activities.

On Monday March 15th, at 7-8.30.pm at St Margaret’s College Chapel, 12 Winchester St Merivale, ( to the left off Merivale Lane) I am presenting as part of the 6 week series: “A Good Childhood”. This session is: the coherence of being: the spirit of childhhod. Storytime, play, music, education. The three presenters include Miriam McCaleb, early childhhod specialist, Nathan Mikaere-Wallis, X Factor Education, Julie Wylie music specialist. I will be speaking about music in relation to the brain, how and why music works through musical play, the musical spirit of the child and especially how musical play fosters close relationship between parent and child and develops a sense of music community.

After eighteen years since founding Musical Parenting, I have ticked the boxes of what I set out to do, but I want to do more to develop the art of good Musical Parenting practice. There are now regular training programmes, there is now a Diploma in Early Childhood which I developed in conjunction with the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand. Members are doing such great work laying the foundation of music for life. It is gratifying to see how many of our members are actively involved in music training and who have completed their music qualifications. I need to concentrate on the what, why and hows of Musical Parenting finding more of the pieces of the music jig-saw puzzle. I will come to meetings from time to time. I know Musical Parenting meetings will continue to inspire and delight.

Soili Perkio a brilliant music presenter from Finland Sibelius Music Academy will be presenting at Chisnallwood School on Saturday 1st May 10 am.-4.pm. You are in for a musical feast.
